In a significant demonstration of India’s evolving air defence capabilities, Rohit Kapil, a senior commander in the Indian Air Force, played a pivotal role in neutralising a hostile ballistic missile threat during the high-stakes Operation Sindoor.
Commissioned as a fighter pilot in 1998, Kapil has built an extensive career spanning over two decades, logging more than 3,500 flying hours on advanced aircraft, including the Sukhoi Su-30MKI. Known for his operational expertise, he has previously commanded frontline squadrons and held key leadership roles within the IAF, earning recognition for both strategic planning and combat readiness.
The defining moment of his career came during Operation Sindoor, a major military response launched by India amid heightened tensions with Pakistan following a deadly terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir. During the operation, intelligence inputs indicated the launch of a Pakistani Fateh-class ballistic missile reportedly aimed at the national capital, Delhi, raising alarms across India’s defence network.
Stationed at the Sirsa Air Base in Haryana, Kapil, who was commanding a critical air defence unit, oversaw the rapid deployment of India’s advanced Barak-8 surface-to-air missile system. Acting swiftly under immense pressure, his team successfully intercepted and destroyed the incoming missile mid-air, preventing what could have been a catastrophic strike on a densely populated region.
The successful interception marked a crucial milestone for India’s integrated air defence architecture, highlighting the effectiveness of real-time surveillance, coordination, and missile response systems. Defence experts view the operation as a testament to the growing sophistication of India’s missile defence shield and the preparedness of its armed forces in countering high-speed aerial threats.
In recognition of his exceptional leadership and decisive action during the operation, Air Commodore Kapil was awarded the Yudh Seva Medal in 2025, one of the country’s distinguished wartime honours. He had earlier been conferred the Vayu Sena Medal in 2018 for meritorious service.
While the incident has been widely highlighted in defence circles, some operational details surrounding the missile interception remain based on limited public-domain reporting. Nevertheless, the episode underscores the critical importance of leadership, preparedness, and technological advancement in modern warfare.
Air Commodore Rohit Kapil’s actions during Operation Sindoor not only reinforced India’s defensive capabilities but also showcased the vital role of experienced commanders in safeguarding national security during moments of crisis.
