West Bengal Imposes Motorcycle Restrictions Ahead of Elections 2026 to Ensure Peaceful Polling
News Mania Desk/ Piyal Chatterjee/20th April 2026

The Chief Electoral Officer West Bengal has issued strict guidelines restricting motorcycle movement across the state to ensure free, fair, and violence-free Elections 2026. The directive, dated April 20, 2026, has been sent to all District Election Officers and police authorities for immediate implementation.
As per the order, no motorcycle rallies will be permitted from two days prior to polling (Polling Day-2 onward). Additionally, motorcycle movement will be prohibited between 6:00 PM and 6:00 AM, except in emergencies such as medical needs or family functions. During daytime hours (6:00 AM to 6:00 PM), pillion riding is banned, with exemptions for essential activities including medical emergencies and school transportation.

On the day of polling, limited relaxation has been allowed. Family pillion riding will be permitted between 6:00 AM and 6:00 PM strictly for voting purposes and other essential needs.
Authorities have clarified that individuals requiring exemptions must obtain prior written permission from their local police station. District administrations have been instructed to widely publicise these measures through print, electronic, and social media, and to ensure strict enforcement in coordination with police.
The move aims to curb intimidation, prevent unlawful gatherings, and maintain order during the electoral process.
