Tech Mahindra Headcount Drops by Nearly 2,000 in Q4 FY26 Amid Demand Slowdown

Tech Mahindra reported a notable decline in its workforce during the fourth quarter of FY26, with employee numbers falling by nearly 2,000. The reduction highlights the cautious stance adopted by the IT services firm as it navigates a challenging global business environment marked by weak demand and client spending pressures.
During the January–March quarter, the company’s headcount decreased by 1,993 employees compared to the previous quarter. The decline was spread across various roles and business segments, indicating a broader effort to streamline operations rather than targeted layoffs in specific areas.
The workforce reduction comes at a time when the Indian IT sector is witnessing slower growth due to macroeconomic uncertainties, particularly in key markets such as North America and Europe. Clients have been tightening budgets and delaying technology investments, prompting companies like Tech Mahindra to focus on cost optimisation and operational efficiency.
Despite the drop in employee numbers, the company showed some positive signs in its performance metrics. Attrition levels eased during the quarter, reflecting improved employee retention compared to earlier periods. Additionally, margins and profitability saw modest improvement, suggesting that the company’s cost-control measures are beginning to have an impact.
The decline in headcount aligns with a broader industry trend, where IT firms are slowing hiring and prioritising better utilisation of existing employees. Instead of aggressive recruitment, companies are increasingly investing in upskilling their workforce, particularly in emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence and digital transformation.
On a year-on-year basis, Tech Mahindra has also seen a slight dip in its overall workforce, with total employee strength now standing at over 1.47 lakh. The numbers reflect a period of consolidation as the company adjusts to evolving market conditions.
