Michael Opens at ₹16 Crore, Holds Ground Amid Box Office Competition

News Mania Desk/ Piyal Chatterjee/27th April 2026

The biographical drama Michael, starring Jaafar Jackson, has recorded a steady opening at the Indian box office, earning approximately ₹16 crore over its first weekend. The film, based on the life of pop legend Michael Jackson, has managed to draw audiences despite strong competition from established releases.

According to trade estimates, the film showed gradual growth across its opening days, benefiting from weekend footfall in metropolitan cities. While the numbers are considered moderate, industry observers view the performance as respectable for an international biopic in a market dominated by domestic productions.

One of the film’s notable achievements has been surpassing the daily collections of Dhurandhar 2: The Revenge, starring Ranveer Singh, which is currently in its sixth week. Although Dhurandhar 2 remains a major box office success overall, the fresh release has edged ahead in recent daily earnings, reflecting renewed audience interest.

At the same time, Michael faces stiff competition from Bhooth Bangla, featuring Akshay Kumar. The horror-comedy continues to perform strongly in theatres, maintaining its grip on audiences and contributing to a competitive box office environment.

The ongoing theatrical clash has created a diverse lineup, with each film catering to different audience preferences. While Bhooth Bangla appeals to mass-market viewers seeking entertainment, and Dhurandhar 2 continues its successful run, Michael is attracting viewers interested in music, legacy, and biographical storytelling.

Despite challenges such as the ongoing IPL season, which often impacts cinema attendance, Michael has managed to secure a stable opening. Analysts believe curiosity surrounding the portrayal of Michael Jackson’s life, combined with the film’s global appeal, has contributed to its performance.

Looking ahead, the film’s box office trajectory will depend on word-of-mouth and its ability to sustain momentum in the coming weeks. While it may not achieve blockbuster status, its opening weekend suggests a promising run in a crowded market.
