Vijay Set to Form Government in Tamil Nadu as VCK, IUML Extend Support to TVK

News Mania Desks/ Piyal Chatterjee/ 9th May 2026

Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief Vijay moved a step closer to forming the government in Tamil Nadu after the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) and the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) announced unconditional support to his party following the Assembly election results. The backing from the two parties significantly strengthened TVKโ€™s position in the newly elected Assembly and reduced uncertainty surrounding government formation in the state.

The post-election political developments came after TVK emerged as the single largest party in the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections but fell short of the majority mark needed to independently form the government. With no alliance securing a decisive mandate, political negotiations intensified over the past few days as parties explored possible combinations to ensure a stable administration.

VCK leader Thol Thirumavalavan declared that his party would extend unconditional support to Vijayโ€™s party in order to maintain political stability and avoid a constitutional crisis in the state. He stated that the decision was taken in the broader interest of Tamil Nadu and to prevent the possibility of prolonged political uncertainty. The VCK, however, is expected to remain outside the government for the time being while continuing to support the alliance from the outside.

Shortly after the VCK announcement, the IUML also pledged support to TVK, boosting the coalitionโ€™s numbers in the Assembly. The combined support from allied and like-minded parties pushed Vijayโ€™s camp beyond the majority mark required to stake claim to form the government in the 234-member House.

Senior TVK leaders welcomed the support and described it as a mandate for a โ€œstable and secular administration.โ€ Party general secretary Aadhav Arjuna thanked the supporting parties, including Congress and Left allies, for standing behind Vijay during the crucial phase of government formation. According to party sources, discussions regarding cabinet formation and allocation of responsibilities are expected to begin soon after the official invitation to form the government is received.

The developments have dramatically reshaped Tamil Nadu politics, traditionally dominated by the DMK and AIADMK. Vijayโ€™s emergence as a major political force within a short span of launching his party has attracted national attention and altered the stateโ€™s political equations. Political analysts believe the support extended by smaller parties reflects an attempt to create a broader anti-DMK and anti-AIADMK political front under Vijayโ€™s leadership.

Meanwhile, rival parties have continued to criticise some of the post-poll negotiations, questioning the ideological compatibility of the emerging alliance. Despite the criticism, TVK leaders expressed confidence that the coalition would provide stable governance and focus on development, employment and welfare initiatives.

Vijay is now expected to meet Governor R.N. Ravi to formally stake claim to form the government. Preparations for the swearing-in ceremony are reportedly underway, with party supporters celebrating what they describe as the beginning of a new political era in Tamil Nadu.
