AIADMK Faction Backs Vijay’s TVK Ahead of Tamil Nadu Floor Test

A major political development unfolded in Tamil Nadu after a faction within the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam extended support to actor-turned-politician C. Joseph Vijay and his Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam government ahead of the crucial Assembly floor test.

The support was announced by senior AIADMK leaders S. P. Velumani and C. Ve. Shanmugam after consultations with party legislators and supporters. The faction said it would formally submit a letter backing Vijay’s government, strengthening the TVK’s chances of comfortably proving its majority in the Assembly.

Explaining the decision, Shanmugam stated that the faction strongly opposed any move toward an alliance with the rival Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam. He said the AIADMK was founded on anti-DMK principles and several party members were unhappy with discussions suggesting possible cooperation with the ruling party.

The latest development has intensified speculation about internal divisions within the AIADMK following its disappointing performance in the 2026 Assembly elections. The party reportedly won only 47 seats despite contesting a large number of constituencies, triggering criticism of the current leadership.

Reports suggested that a section of AIADMK MLAs demanded the resignation of party general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami after the election setback. Some legislators are also believed to have pushed for Velumani to become the leader of the AIADMK legislature party. However, Velumani denied claims of a split and maintained that the party remained united.

The political uncertainty comes at a crucial time for Vijay, who recently took oath as Chief Minister and must now prove his majority on the Assembly floor within the deadline set by Governor Rajendra Arlekar.

TVK has already secured support from several parties and independent legislators, including the Congress, Left parties and other regional allies. Political observers believe the backing from the AIADMK faction could significantly strengthen Vijay’s position and reshape opposition politics in Tamil Nadu.
