West Bengal Races to Verify Beneficiaries Ahead of Annapurna Scheme Launch

The West Bengal government is undertaking a massive verification exercise ahead of the rollout of its proposed Annapurna cash transfer scheme, as officials work to ensure that only eligible beneficiaries receive financial assistance under the programme. The verification process has emerged as a significant administrative challenge, with authorities facing a tight deadline before the scheme’s implementation.

The Annapurna scheme, announced by the state government as a key welfare initiative, is expected to provide direct financial support to women. However, before benefits can be disbursed, officials must identify and remove ineligible names from the existing beneficiary database. The exercise includes checking records for deceased individuals, duplicate entries, people who have migrated, and other cases that may no longer meet eligibility requirements.

According to government sources, district administrations have been directed to carry out extensive field-level verification. The government, however, has defended the exercise, describing it as a necessary step to improve transparency and accountability in welfare distribution.
