India and Myanmar have agreed to strengthen cooperation across a wide range of sectors, including trade, security, connectivity and border management, following high-level discussions between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Myanmar President U Min Aung Hlaing. The talks underscored the importance both nations attach to their long-standing partnership and their shared vision for regional stability and economic growth.
During the meeting, the leaders reviewed the progress of bilateral relations and explored ways to expand cooperation in areas of mutual interest. Economic engagement featured prominently in the discussions, with both sides expressing a desire to boost trade and investment ties. They also examined opportunities for collaboration in sectors such as energy, healthcare, education, digital technology and innovation, which are expected to play an increasingly important role in future cooperation.
Security and border management emerged as key topics during the talks. Prime Minister Modi highlighted concerns related to insurgent groups and other security challenges along the India-Myanmar border. He stressed the need for coordinated efforts to prevent the misuse of territory by anti-national elements and to ensure peace in border regions. Myanmar, in turn, reaffirmed its commitment to addressing India’s security concerns and assured New Delhi that its territory would not be used for activities harmful to India’s interests.
The leaders also discussed the importance of enhancing physical and economic connectivity between the two countries. Particular attention was given to major infrastructure initiatives, including the Kaladan Multi-Modal Transit Transport Project and the India-Myanmar-Thailand Trilateral Highway. These projects are expected to improve transportation links, facilitate trade and promote greater interaction between people and businesses across the region.
In addition, both sides emphasized the significance of development partnerships and capacity-building programmes that have contributed to Myanmar’s socio-economic progress. They reiterated their commitment to working together on regional and international issues while supporting initiatives aimed at promoting peace, prosperity and sustainable development.
The meeting reflected the strategic importance of India-Myanmar relations, especially given the two countries’ shared border and historical ties. Officials said the discussions demonstrated a mutual determination to deepen engagement across multiple sectors and strengthen cooperation to address emerging challenges while advancing common goals for regional development and stability.
