Shreyas Iyer Set to Take Over as India’s T20I Captain, Report Says

News Mania Desk/ Piyal Chatterjee/ 6th June 2026

India’s T20I team could soon witness a major leadership change, with Shreyas Iyer emerging as the frontrunner to replace Suryakumar Yadav as captain ahead of the team’s upcoming white-ball assignments. According to reports, the national selectors are expected to back Iyer as part of a long-term strategy focused on the 2028 T20 World Cup and the Los Angeles Olympics.

The decision is expected to be discussed when the selection committee meets to pick squads for the forthcoming tours of Ireland and England. Sources indicate that the leadership group, including chief selector Ajit Agarkar and head coach Gautam Gambhir, has been evaluating the future direction of the T20 side and sees Iyer as a strong candidate to lead the next phase of the team’s development.

Suryakumar, who captained India to the T20 World Cup title earlier this year, is reportedly under scrutiny following a prolonged dip in form. His struggles in international cricket and the IPL have reportedly prompted selectors to consider a change at the helm despite the team’s recent success under his leadership.

Iyer’s credentials have been strengthened by his consistent performances in domestic and franchise cricket, as well as his experience leading teams in the IPL. Several cricket experts, including former Australia captain Ricky Ponting, have publicly endorsed him as a potential future leader for India in the shortest format.

The report also suggests that young batting star Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is in line for his maiden international call-up, highlighting the selectors’ emphasis on building a squad for the future. Meanwhile, players such as Tilak Varma remain in contention for leadership roles within the setup.
