Mumbai: Director Buchi Babu Sana has responded to the controversy surrounding the portrayal of actress Janhvi Kapoor in the recently released film Peddi, saying the production team has decided to make changes following criticism from viewers and social media users.
The backlash emerged soon after the film’s release, with many audiences expressing concern over the depiction of Kapoor’s character, Achiyamma. Critics argued that the character was presented in a manner that objectified women and failed to provide sufficient depth or agency within the narrative. The debate quickly gained traction online, sparking discussions about gender representation in mainstream cinema.
Addressing the issue, Buchi Babu Sana acknowledged the concerns raised by viewers and said the filmmakers had taken the feedback seriously. He stated that it was never the intention of the team to offend audiences or portray women disrespectfully. The director added that after reviewing the criticism, the makers had decided to modify certain portions of the film that had attracted objections.
Sana also expressed regret over the controversy and emphasised that filmmakers have a responsibility to ensure women are represented with dignity on screen. He said the experience had prompted the team to reflect on audience expectations and promised greater sensitivity in future projects.
The controversy has reignited a broader conversation about the treatment of female characters in commercial films. While some viewers welcomed the director’s decision to make changes, others questioned why such concerns were not addressed during the production stage itself.
Despite the criticism, Peddi, which stars Ram Charan alongside Janhvi Kapoor, has performed strongly at the box office and attracted significant audience interest. However, the debate surrounding the film has shifted attention beyond its commercial success, highlighting ongoing concerns about gender portrayal and representation in the entertainment industry.
