TMC Dissident Alleges Criticism of Abhishek Banerjee Triggered Internal Rift

News Mania Desk/ Piyal Chatterjee/ 7th June 2026

Fresh revelations from within the Trinamool Congress (TMC) have shed light on the growing internal unrest in the party, with a dissident leader claiming that the inability to openly criticise senior leader Abhishek Banerjee became a major factor behind the ongoing rebellion. The remarks have brought renewed attention to the widening divisions within the ruling West Bengal party and the challenges facing its leadership.

Speaking about the circumstances that led to the revolt, expelled TMC leader Sandipan Saha alleged that many party members and legislators had become increasingly frustrated after recent electoral setbacks. According to him, concerns regarding organisational decisions, campaign strategies and leadership accountability were not being adequately addressed within the party structure.

Saha claimed that discussions following the election results were heavily influenced by the need to defend the leadership rather than evaluate the reasons behind the party’s performance. He alleged that criticism directed at Abhishek Banerjee, the party’s national general secretary and one of its most influential leaders, was not welcomed, creating an atmosphere where dissenting opinions could not be expressed freely.

The dissident leader argued that several party workers and legislators felt their concerns were being ignored, leading to growing resentment within sections of the organisation. He suggested that the lack of internal dialogue ultimately pushed some leaders to openly challenge the party leadership, resulting in the current crisis.

The rebellion has emerged as one of the most serious internal challenges faced by the TMC in recent years. While the dissidents have voiced concerns about Abhishek Banerjee’s leadership style and decision-making process, most have refrained from directly criticising party supremo Mamata Banerjee, who continues to enjoy significant support among party workers and leaders.

Political observers believe the controversy reflects deeper concerns regarding power distribution and decision-making within the party. The developments have coincided with a major organisational reshuffle undertaken by the TMC leadership in an apparent effort to contain the fallout and restore unity.

In recent weeks, the party has witnessed expulsions, public exchanges of accusations and claims of support from elected representatives. These developments have fuelled speculation about the possibility of a larger split within the organisation if differences remain unresolved.
