Putin Says Sanctions Threats Against India Would Backfire, Praises Modi’s Leadership

News Mania Desk/ Piyal Chatterjee/7th June 2026

Russian President Vladimir Putin has said that any attempt to pressure India through sanctions would ultimately prove ineffective and backfire, expressing confidence in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership and India’s commitment to safeguarding its national interests.

Speaking during an interaction at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF), Putin emphasized that India has consistently pursued an independent foreign policy and has demonstrated its ability to make sovereign decisions despite external pressure. Referring to discussions surrounding sanctions and geopolitical tensions, the Russian leader said India would continue to act in accordance with its own priorities rather than outside expectations.

Putin noted that New Delhi has emerged as a significant global player, capable of balancing relationships with multiple countries while maintaining strategic autonomy. He argued that efforts to influence India’s foreign policy through threats or coercive measures would not succeed, describing such attempts as likely to “boomerang” on those imposing them.

The Russian President also highlighted the strength of the long-standing partnership between Moscow and New Delhi, describing India as a reliable and trusted partner. He said bilateral cooperation has expanded steadily across sectors such as trade, energy, technology and investment, despite the changing geopolitical environment and international challenges faced by both nations.

According to Putin, Russia remains committed to strengthening ties with India and does not view New Delhi’s growing engagement with Western nations as a threat to bilateral relations. He stressed that the relationship between the two countries is built on mutual respect and shared interests rather than short-term political considerations.

The Russian leader further expressed optimism about the future of economic cooperation, pointing to rising trade volumes and expanding business partnerships. He suggested that commercial exchanges between the two nations could continue to grow significantly in the coming years.

Putin’s remarks come at a time when India continues to face scrutiny from some Western countries over its economic and energy ties with Russia. New Delhi, however, has repeatedly maintained that its foreign policy decisions are guided by national interests, energy security and strategic considerations rather than external pressure.
