Meghalaya Border Village Protests Fence Alignment, Fears Isolation from Rest of India

News Mania Desk/ Piyal Chatterjee/ 9th June 2026

Residents of a border village in Meghalaya have launched protests against the proposed alignment of the India-Bangladesh border fence, expressing fears that the project could leave their community isolated from the rest of the country.

Villagers from Lyngkhong in East Khasi Hills district have objected to plans to construct the fence approximately 150 yards inside Indian territory, in line with existing border-fencing guidelines. They argue that the proposed alignment would place their settlement outside the fenced area, creating significant challenges for daily life and raising concerns about security, mobility, and access to essential services.

The villagers have submitted a memorandum to government authorities, urging them to reconsider the plan and instead construct the fence along the international boundary, or zero line. According to local residents, they support efforts to strengthen border security but believe the current alignment would unfairly affect communities living close to the frontier.

Residents fear that being positioned beyond the fence could disrupt access to schools, healthcare facilities, markets, and administrative services. Farmers are particularly concerned that restrictions on movement could hamper agricultural activities and affect livelihoods that depend on regular access to fields and neighbouring villages.

The issue has once again highlighted the complexities involved in fencing the India-Bangladesh border in Meghalaya. The northeastern state shares a border stretching more than 440 kilometres with Bangladesh. While a large portion of the border has already been fenced, several sections remain disputed due to difficult terrain, land ownership concerns, and objections from local communities.

Officials have maintained that border fencing is an important component of national security and is aimed at preventing illegal crossings and cross-border crimes. At the same time, authorities have acknowledged the concerns raised by residents and indicated that discussions are underway to explore possible solutions.

As talks continue, villagers are demanding assurances that any fencing project will protect national interests without compromising the rights, connectivity, and livelihoods of communities that have lived along the international border for generations.
