News Mania Desk/ Piyal Chatterjee/11th June 2026

Violent anti-immigration protests broke out in Belfast, Northern Ireland, after a knife attack in the city heightened tensions and sparked unrest in several neighbourhoods. Political leaders and community representatives have appealed for calm, warning against attempts to exploit the incident to fuel hatred and division.
The demonstrations followed the arrest of a Sudanese refugee in connection with a stabbing that left a man seriously injured. Graphic footage of the attack circulated widely on social media, prompting outrage and leading to protests that quickly escalated into clashes and acts of vandalism.
According to reports, masked individuals set vehicles on fire, damaged properties and targeted homes believed to belong to members of ethnic minority communities. Police were deployed in large numbers to restore order and prevent further violence, while emergency services responded to multiple incidents across the city.
Northern Ireland’s political leaders condemned the unrest, describing the attacks on homes and businesses as unacceptable and contrary to the values of the community. Officials stressed that criminal actions by an individual should not be used to justify hostility towards entire groups of people.
Authorities have urged the public to avoid spreading unverified information online, warning that misinformation can intensify tensions during sensitive situations. Community organisations also expressed concern over the safety of migrants and refugees living in Belfast, with some residents reportedly staying indoors amid fears of further disturbances.
The suspect arrested in connection with the stabbing has been charged, and the case is proceeding through the legal system. Police have emphasised that investigations are ongoing and have called on citizens to allow the judicial process to take its course . However, leaders across the political spectrum have insisted that violence and intimidation cannot be accepted as a response to criminal incidents, urging communities to remain united during a period of heightened tension.
