At least 13 people, including 12 Indian nationals, were killed and 66 others injured in a major explosion at a gas processing facility in Qatar’s Ras Laffan Industrial City, authorities confirmed. The incident occurred at the Barzan gas facility, one of the country’s key energy installations, triggering a large-scale emergency response and prompting investigations into the cause of the blast.

According to Qatari officials, the explosion took place during maintenance and operational procedures at the plant. Preliminary assessments suggest the incident was the result of a technical malfunction, although authorities have launched a detailed investigation to determine the exact sequence of events leading to the tragedy. Officials ruled out any deliberate attack or external interference.

The Indian Embassy in Doha confirmed that 12 Indian workers lost their lives in the accident and said it was working closely with Qatari authorities to provide assistance to the affected families. The embassy is coordinating efforts related to medical treatment for the injured, documentation procedures and the repatriation of the deceased workers’ remains.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar expressed condolences to the families of those who died and assured them of all possible support from the Indian government. He said Indian diplomatic missions in Qatar had been instructed to extend necessary assistance and remain in close contact with local authorities.

The blast has raised concerns about safety measures at one of the world’s most important liquefied natural gas production hubs. Ras Laffan plays a critical role in Qatar’s energy sector and is a major contributor to global LNG supplies. However, Qatari officials emphasized that the explosion was confined to a specific section of the facility and did not affect the country’s broader gas export operations.
