Lionel Messi Breaks World Cup Goals Record as Argentina Reach Knockout Stage

News Mania Desk/ Piyal Chatterjee/ 23rd June 2026

Lionel Messi etched his name deeper into football history by becoming the all-time leading goalscorer in FIFA World Cup history during Argentina’s 2-0 victory over Austria at the 2026 World Cup. The Argentine captain surpassed former Germany striker Miroslav Klose’s long-standing record and helped his team secure a place in the knockout rounds.

Messi entered the match tied with Klose on 16 World Cup goals. The 38-year-old had an early chance to claim the record when Argentina were awarded a penalty, but his spot-kick was saved, delaying the milestone. However, the veteran forward made amends later in the first half, finding the net with a clinical finish to register his 17th World Cup goal and move to the top of the tournament’s all-time scoring chart.

The Argentine star was not done yet. Deep into stoppage time, Messi scored his second goal of the match, taking his overall World Cup tally to 18 goals and further extending his record. The victory ensured Argentina maintained its winning start to the tournament and strengthened its status as one of the favourites to retain the title.

Messi’s achievement also saw him surpass Brazilian legend Marta, who scored 17 goals in Women’s World Cup competitions. As a result, he now holds the record for the highest number of goals scored across both men’s and women’s FIFA World Cup tournaments.
