The controversy surrounding the alleged misappropriation of donations at the Ram Janmabhoomi Temple in Ayodhya has deepened, with Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust General Secretary Champat Rai and trustee Anil Mishra tendering their resignations as investigations into the case gather pace.

The Trust announced that both office-bearers voluntarily stepped down to ensure a transparent and impartial investigation into the alleged financial irregularities. It clarified that neither Champat Rai nor Anil Mishra has been named as an accused in the First Information Report (FIR) registered in connection with the case. According to the Trust, the resignations were submitted purely on moral and administrative grounds to preserve public confidence in the institution.

The controversy surfaced after allegations emerged that a group of employees and intermediaries linked to the temple’s donation collection system had siphoned off funds contributed by devotees. Following preliminary findings, police registered an FIR and launched an extensive probe into the alleged embezzlement.

Authorities have arrested eight individuals in connection with the case. Investigators claim to have recovered a substantial portion of the allegedly misappropriated money, while a Special Investigation Team (SIT) continues to scrutinise financial records, donation registers, surveillance footage and cash-handling procedures. Officials are also examining whether established protocols governing the collection, storage and accounting of donations were violated.

In an official statement, the Trust expressed shock over the alleged wrongdoing but assured devotees that the institution remains committed to safeguarding donations offered at the temple. It said full cooperation is being extended to investigating agencies and reiterated its commitment to maintaining transparency and accountability throughout the inquiry.

The developments have triggered strong political reactions, with opposition parties demanding a comprehensive and independent probe into the alleged financial irregularities. Several leaders have called for greater oversight of the Trust’s financial operations to ensure accountability in managing public donations.

Meanwhile, the Trust has maintained that the resignations should not be interpreted as an admission of guilt. Instead, it said the move reflects its resolve to facilitate a fair investigation and uphold the faith of millions of devotees. The findings of the SIT are expected to determine whether further legal or administrative action will be taken against those allegedly involved in the misuse of temple donations.
