Prime Minister Narendra Modi has embarked on a three-day official visit to Seychelles, where he will participate as the Guest of Honour at the country’s 50th Independence Day celebrations. The visit is expected to further strengthen the long-standing diplomatic, strategic and economic ties between India and the Indian Ocean island nation.
Modi’s visit comes at the invitation of Seychelles President Wavel Ramkalawan and marks another significant step in India’s outreach to its maritime neighbours under its “Neighbourhood First” policy and Vision SAGAR (Security and Growth for All in the Region). The visit underscores New Delhi’s growing emphasis on enhancing cooperation with countries in the Indian Ocean amid evolving geopolitical dynamics.
During the visit, the Prime Minister is scheduled to hold bilateral talks with President Ramkalawan and other senior leaders of Seychelles. The discussions are expected to focus on expanding cooperation in maritime security, defence, trade, healthcare, digital technology, education, climate resilience and capacity building. Both sides are also likely to review the progress of ongoing India-assisted development projects and explore new areas of collaboration.
India and Seychelles share close historical and cultural ties, strengthened by a large Indian diaspora that has contributed significantly to the island nation’s development. Over the years, India has emerged as one of Seychelles’ key development partners by supporting infrastructure projects, providing defence assistance, extending lines of credit and offering scholarships and technical training programmes.
The Prime Minister’s participation in the Golden Jubilee celebrations of Seychelles’ independence is being viewed as a symbol of the strong friendship between the two countries. The visit is also expected to reinforce India’s role as a trusted security partner in the Indian Ocean Region through cooperation in coastal surveillance, maritime domain awareness and humanitarian assistance.
Officials said several agreements and memoranda of understanding could be signed during the visit to further deepen bilateral engagement across multiple sectors.
The Ministry of External Affairs stated that the visit reflects the enduring partnership between India and Seychelles, built on mutual trust, shared democratic values and common interests in ensuring peace, stability and sustainable development in the Indian Ocean Region. The high-level engagement is expected to give fresh momentum to bilateral relations and reaffirm India’s commitment to strengthening partnerships with friendly maritime nations.
