Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi is scheduled to arrive in New Delhi on Wednesday evening for a three-day official visit aimed at strengthening the growing strategic partnership between India and Japan. The visit marks her first official trip to India since taking office and will be highlighted by the 16th India-Japan Annual Summit with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The leaders are expected to hold comprehensive discussions on bilateral, regional and global issues while reviewing progress in key areas of cooperation.
Prime Minister Takaichi will receive a ceremonial welcome in the national capital before holding delegation-level talks with Prime Minister Modi. The summit is expected to focus on expanding collaboration in trade, investment, defence, security, infrastructure, digital technology, semiconductors, artificial intelligence, clean energy and resilient supply chains. Both countries are also likely to reaffirm their commitment to maintaining a free, open and inclusive Indo-Pacific region amid evolving geopolitical developments.
Several agreements and Memoranda of Understanding are expected to be signed during the visit to further strengthen cooperation across strategic and economic sectors. Officials from both countries are expected to discuss ways to enhance collaboration in critical minerals, advanced manufacturing, innovation and emerging technologies. The visit is also expected to provide fresh momentum to ongoing flagship projects and create new opportunities for future investments.
Economic ties will remain a key focus of the discussions as Japan continues to be one of India’s largest foreign investors. More than 1,400 Japanese companies currently operate in India across sectors including automobiles, electronics, manufacturing and infrastructure. Major bilateral projects, including the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail corridor, are expected to feature prominently during the summit, with both sides reviewing their progress and exploring avenues for faster implementation.
Prime Minister Takaichi is also expected to interact with business leaders from both countries to encourage greater private-sector participation in strengthening economic relations. The discussions are likely to focus on enhancing investment flows, promoting technology partnerships and improving supply chain resilience in the face of global economic uncertainties.
The visit comes at a time when India and Japan continue to deepen cooperation across multiple sectors under their Special Strategic and Global Partnership. Besides economic collaboration, the two countries are expected to discuss regional security, maritime cooperation and defence exchanges, reflecting their shared vision for peace, stability and sustainable development in the Indo-Pacific. Officials believe the summit will further consolidate bilateral relations and open new avenues for long-term cooperation between the two Asian partners.
