Mexico booked their place in the Round of 16 of the FIFA World Cup 2026 with a convincing 2-0 victory over Ecuador, ending a 40-year wait for a knockout-stage win at the tournament. Backed by a passionate home crowd, the co-hosts produced a disciplined and clinical performance to keep their World Cup campaign alive.
Ecuador started brightly and created a few early opportunities, but Mexico gradually settled into the contest and took control of possession. The breakthrough came in the 22nd minute when forward Julián Quiñones calmly finished from close range after a well-worked attacking move, giving the hosts a deserved lead.
Mexico doubled their advantage just nine minutes later through experienced striker Raúl Jiménez. The veteran forward made no mistake with his finish to score his 47th international goal, putting Ecuador under significant pressure before the halftime whistle.
After the break, Ecuador pushed forward in search of a way back into the match and enjoyed more of the ball. However, Mexico’s well-organised defence remained compact and denied the South American side any clear scoring opportunities. Goalkeeper Raúl Rangel also made an important save to preserve his side’s clean sheet as Mexico comfortably managed the remainder of the contest.
Mexico continued to threaten on the counterattack, while young midfielder Gilberto Mora impressed with another composed display in midfield. Ecuador’s hopes of mounting a late comeback suffered a major setback when defender Piero Hincapié was sent off in the closing stages after receiving a red card.
