Democratic Socialist Melat Kiros Defeats Veteran Congresswoman in Major Colorado Primary Upset

News Mania Desk/ Piyal Chatterjee/1st July 2026

Democratic socialist Melat Kiros has secured a landmark victory in Colorado’s Democratic primary, defeating veteran Congresswoman Diana DeGette in a result that is being viewed as one of the biggest upsets of the 2026 US election cycle. The outcome signals a growing shift within the Democratic Party, with progressive candidates gaining momentum against long-serving establishment leaders.

Kiros, a first-time congressional candidate and former attorney, unseated DeGette, who had represented Colorado’s 1st Congressional District in the US House of Representatives for nearly 30 years. During her campaign, Kiros positioned herself as a voice for a new generation of Democratic leadership, focusing on issues such as affordable healthcare, workers’ rights, economic equality, campaign finance reform and housing affordability.

Backed by progressive organisations and grassroots activists, Kiros built her campaign around reducing corporate influence in politics and expanding social welfare programmes. She also advocated for significant changes in US foreign policy, including a tougher stance on military assistance and greater emphasis on human rights. Her campaign relied heavily on small-dollar donations and volunteer support, helping her overcome the financial advantage enjoyed by the incumbent.

Despite DeGette’s long political career and strong name recognition, Kiros managed to connect with voters seeking change within the Democratic Party. Political analysts said the result reflects increasing support for progressive policies among Democratic voters, particularly younger generations who have become more active in recent election cycles.

DeGette had served Colorado’s Denver-based congressional district since 1997 and was regarded as one of the party’s most experienced lawmakers. Her defeat marks the end of nearly three decades in Congress and is expected to trigger broader discussions within the Democratic Party about its future direction and leadership.

With the district considered a Democratic stronghold, Kiros is widely expected to be the favourite in the general election. If elected in November, she would become the first Black woman to represent Colorado in the US Congress, marking another historic milestone for the state.
