“West Bengal to introduce AC trams, develop new routes in the metropolis”, said, Shri Arjun Singh, Hon’ble Minister of Transport, Government of West Bengal

MCCI organised a Special Session on Felicitations to Shri Arjun Singh, Hon’ble Minister of Transport, Government of West Bengal followed by Special Address on ‘Vision for New Transportation System in West Bengal, TODAY, 1 July 2026, at The Park Hotel.

West Bengal Transport Minister Arjun Singh said on Wednesday that the state government will introduce AC trams in the metropolis and also develop new routes in the city.

Speaking at an interactive session, the Minister said the government has given the mandate to RITES to do a survey. He said new lines would be laid in the city.

He said tramways routes will be introduced in New Town, and also another route will connect Dakshineswar and Kalighat.

He also said new AC buses, both electric and CNG, would be added to the existing fleet of state government buses.

A holistic charging infrastructure would be built for the electric buses, he said.

Shri Singh said the Government is also looking at the inland waterways transportation system in the state and also to develop a port along the river Ganges.

The Minister said there is a need to build a business-friendly environment in the state which has been sadly missing for the last 49 years.

“There is a need to improve logistics and transportation in the state. A healthy government supports healthy business”, he said.

He assured the investors that no files will be allowed to get stuck in the bureaucracy and the political class will swiftly take action.

Shri Singh said the state government will make Bengal prosper along with the business fraternity. He also said that the Government wishes to do a proper business summit unlike the previous ones to attract investment.

The State Government will give security to the business in the state, Shri Singh said.

Earlier, Shri Munish Jhajharia, Senior Vice President, MCCI in his Welcome Address said that as industries expand and urbanisation gathers pace, transportation infrastructure assumes even greater importance. Modern roads, efficient public transport, multimodal logistics hubs, ports, airports, rail connectivity and inland waterways together form the foundation of a competitive economy. For industry, transport is not merely a public service -it is an economic multiplier.
