Seven migrant labourers, including five from Madhya Pradesh, were killed after a massive granite rock slid from the top of a quarry and crushed workers at Madapattana in Bengaluru Urban district on Thursday. Five other workers were injured and are reported to be out of danger, while four escaped unhurt. Police said 16 labourers were at the site when the rock collapsed during drilling operations. Deputy Inspector General S. Girish termed the incident a clear case of negligence and confirmed that an investigation is underway. The quarry owner has agreed to pay ₹10 lakh as compensation to the families of each deceased worker and ₹5 lakh to the injured. Mourning the tragedy, Karnataka Chief Minister D. K. Shivakumar said the state will introduce fresh safety guidelines for quarrying activities to prevent similar accidents.
