Kolkata: The West Bengal government has introduced a new law to recover three times the value of property damaged during violent protests and vandalism. This move aims to take stronger action against public disorder while assuring industries and investors of a safer business environment.
Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced on Saturday that anyone found guilty of damaging industrial properties will not only face jail time but also have to pay a penalty three times the cost of the damage. For example, if the damaged property is worth Rs 1 crore, the offender must pay Rs 3 crore. If they fail to pay, their property may be auctioned to cover the costs.
The announcement followed the recent passing of two important bills by the West Bengal Assembly on June 28. These are the West Bengal Maintenance of Public Order (Amendment) Act and the West Bengal Public Safety and Control of Anti-Social Activities Bill. The amendment act holds individuals financially responsible for damages caused during riots or violent protests. The other bill allows preventive detention without trial for up to 12 months to maintain law and order.
Chief Minister Adhikari emphasized that while people have the right to protest peacefully, violence and destruction of property will not be tolerated. The government hopes that these laws will safeguard industrial units and public assets, thereby boosting investor confidence in West Bengal.
The government has said the West Bengal Maintenance of Public Order (Amendment) Act is meant to protect industrial and public assets and strengthen investor confidence by ensuring accountability for destruction of property. This new legal framework combines strict jail terms with heavy financial penalties to effectively discourage violent protests and vandalism across the state.
