Bangladesh is thinking about joining the Mecca Pact in light of India’s worries over regional security.

Bangladesh is thinking about becoming a member of the Mecca Pact, and the country’s proponents are becoming more vocal. India’s regional security concerns are expected to worsen as a result of news that Bangladesh has been invited to join following the meeting between the Saudi Foreign Minister and Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Humayun Kabir.

Kabir visited Saudi Foreign Minister HH Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud on the fringes of the 23rd OIC Extraordinary Council of Foreign Ministers in Jeddah. Kabir was recently appointed to the cabinet of Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.

“During the meeting, HSM handed over a letter from the Hon’ble Prime Minister of Bangladesh addressed to Saudi Crown Prince and Prime Minister HRH Mohammed bin Salman. Both sides expressed satisfaction at the positive momentum in Bangladesh-Saudi Arabia bilateral relations and reaffirmed their commitment to elevating the partnership to a new height,” a statement from the Bangladesh Foreign Ministry said.

“The Saudi Foreign Minister stated that Bangladesh is among Saudi Arabia’s priority countries and underscored the importance of strengthening economic cooperation. He noted the growing interest of Saudi companies in Bangladesh and expressed interest in further expanding investment and business engagement,” the Bangladesh Foreign Ministry statement said.

“The Saudi Foreign Minister also commended the valuable contribution of Bangladeshi expatriates to the development of the Kingdom. HSM invited the Saudi Foreign Minister to visit Bangladesh at his convenience. Saudi Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs Eng. Waleed Abdulkarim El-Khereiji, Bangladesh’s Permanent Representative to the OIC, and senior officials from both sides were present at the meeting,” the statement added.

Kabir also held a meeting with Turkiye’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, HE Musa Kulaklikaya, on the sidelines of the 23rd OIC Extraordinary CFM in Jeddah.

“The two sides exchanged views on regional developments and expressed their readiness to work closely together on issues of mutual interest. Discussing bilateral relations, both sides expressed satisfaction with the existing level of cooperation including economic and defence sectors and underscored their shared interest in further expanding engagement across a wide range of areas and elevating bilateral relations to a new height,” the statement said.

Although not stated directly, the Jamaat (Ameer) Chief’s numerous beliefs are aimed at India. Even though the Jamaat chairman declared during the election campaign that he wanted positive relations with India, the Jamaat has always maintained a pro-Pakistan attitude.

On August 7, 2026, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Pakistan signed the Mecca Joint Defence Agreement, a trilateral security agreement. The Pakistan Foreign Ministry claims that it creates a framework for collective defence in which an armed attack on any member will be viewed as an attack on all three.

Although India had good relations with Saudi Arabia, Bangladesh joining a pact with Pakistan is unlikely to be welcomed by India because it is perceived as an extension of Pakistan’s efforts to target India. Turkey, on the other hand, has supported Pakistan during Operation Sindoor and continues to take an anti-India stance and sides with Pakistan, which is responsible for terrorist activists and is regarded as a terrorist state.

Concerns of Pakistan cosying up to Bangladesh in order to exploit Bangladesh to sow discord in India have also been raised by India. Additionally, foreign policy experts think that Rahman’s foreign policy tenet is violated by Bangladesh’s admission to the Mecca Pact– “Not Dilli, Not Pindi, Bangladesh before everything.“
