Singapore Orders Probe Into Racist Comments Targeting Indians Online

Singapore authorities have ordered action against a wave of racist and xenophobic comments posted online, including remarks targeting Indians, following discussions surrounding the Nepal floods and Singapore Airlines’ investment in Air India. Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong warned that racial prejudice and hatred must not be allowed to become normalised in the country. He stressed the importance of maintaining social harmony and said Singapore would not tolerate attempts to create divisions between communities.

Home Affairs Minister K. Shanmugam also condemned the online comments, describing them as shameful and completely unacceptable. He said the police would investigate the posts and work to identify those responsible for making or spreading offensive remarks.

Some of the comments emerged after reports that nine Singaporeans were among those missing following the devastating floods in Nepal. Instead of expressing concern for the missing individuals and their families, some users posted derogatory comments based on their ethnicity. The remarks triggered criticism and raised concerns over the spread of racial hostility online.

A separate wave of anti-Indian sentiment was reportedly seen in discussions about Singapore Airlines’ investment in Air India. Singapore Airlines has invested in the Indian carrier, and the development prompted some users to post racist comments directed at Indians, the airline and individuals associated with the investment.

The Singapore government has taken a firm position against such comments, stressing that freedom of expression does not provide protection for speech that threatens racial harmony or promotes hatred. The Ministry of Digital Development and Information is also expected to work with social media platforms to remove content that violates their rules. Authorities have indicated that individuals responsible for unlawful or offensive material could face investigation and possible legal consequences.

Former Singapore prime minister Lee Hsien Loong also called for a strong response to racial hatred. His intervention added to the growing political condemnation of the comments and reinforced the government’s position that racial and xenophobic abuse cannot be allowed to gain wider acceptance.

Singapore is a multi-ethnic society where maintaining racial and religious harmony has long been a major government priority. Authorities have repeatedly warned that inflammatory online content can quickly spread tensions and damage relations between different communities. As investigations continue, Singapore authorities are expected to take action against individuals found responsible for the offensive posts.
