Sensex, Nifty End Lower as Crude Oil Prices and Global Cues Weigh on Markets

News Mania Desk/ Piyal Chatterjee/ 24th September 2026

Indian equity markets ended sharply lower on Thursday, September 24, as a combination of weak global sentiment, rising crude oil prices and concerns over higher bond yields pressured investors. The decline came after a period of volatility in domestic markets, with both the benchmark indices facing selling pressure across several sectors.

The Sensex fell more than 1,200 points during the session before closing significantly lower. The Nifty 50 also declined and finished below the 23,100 mark, reflecting broad-based weakness among large-cap stocks. The selling intensified as investors remained cautious about developments in global financial markets.

A key factor influencing sentiment was the rise in crude oil prices. Higher crude prices are a concern for India because the country depends heavily on imports to meet its energy requirements. A sustained increase in oil prices can raise the import bill and put pressure on inflation, corporate costs and the broader economy.

Investors were also monitoring movements in US Treasury yields. Higher bond yields can affect global capital flows by making US assets relatively more attractive and increasing borrowing costs. This contributed to caution among investors in emerging markets, including India.

The weakness was not limited to a small group of stocks. Several sectors came under pressure as investors reduced exposure to equities amid concerns over the global economic environment. Banking, financial and other major index constituents contributed to the decline, while broader market sentiment also remained subdued.

Market participants were closely watching international developments for further indications about interest rates, inflation and economic growth. Expectations surrounding monetary policy in major economies continue to influence investor behaviour across global markets. The Indian rupee and movements in foreign institutional investment were also among the factors being monitored by market participants. Continued selling by overseas investors can add pressure to domestic equities, particularly when global risk sentiment deteriorates.
