Former German Intelligence Chief August Hanning Arrested Over Espionage Suspicions

News Mania Desk/ Piyal Chatterjee/ 6th October 2026

Germany’s former intelligence chief August Hanning has been detained on suspicion of espionage, treason and obtaining classified state information for a foreign intelligence service, according to reports. The arrest has drawn attention because of Hanning’s previous position as head of Germany’s Federal Intelligence Service (BND). Hanning, who led the BND between 1998 and 2005, was reportedly taken into custody on Tuesday along with a former senior BND official. German authorities also carried out searches at properties linked to the two men as part of the investigation.

The case centres on allegations involving Manfred D., a former BND employee who reportedly had extensive access to confidential intelligence. Investigators allege that he obtained a large volume of classified documents and passed them to Hanning. The material reportedly included intelligence assessments and briefings prepared for senior government officials.

According to the allegations, Manfred D. supplied Hanning with approximately 2,000 documents over a period of time. Prosecutors suspect that some of the material was subsequently used by Hanning to prepare an analysis for an officer working for a foreign intelligence service. Investigators are also examining allegations that Hanning maintained contact with the foreign service and provided political information over several years. Authorities have not publicly identified the foreign intelligence organisation allegedly involved in the case.

The investigation has also raised questions about the alleged financial relationship between the two former intelligence officials. Manfred D. is accused of obtaining confidential information through his former access to BND material and providing it to Hanning in return for payment.

The authorities’ actions include searches of properties connected with both suspects as investigators seek additional evidence concerning the handling and transfer of classified information. The allegations remain subject to investigation, and the precise circumstances surrounding the alleged intelligence activities have yet to be established in court. Hanning’s previous role makes the case particularly significant for Germany’s intelligence and security establishment. He headed the BND for seven years before leaving the position in 2005 and has remained a prominent figure in German security and foreign-policy discussions.

The arrests and searches represent an escalation in the investigation, with prosecutors expected to examine the documents allegedly transferred and the communications between those involved. Any charges and subsequent legal proceedings will determine the extent to which the allegations against the former intelligence officials are substantiated.
