Nana Patekar Dies At 75 After Cardiac Arrest, Maharashtra Announces State Funeral

Veteran actor Nana Patekar died at the age of 75 on Thursday after suffering a cardiac arrest at his residence in Dona Paula, Goa. The acclaimed actor, known for his powerful performances in Hindi and Marathi cinema, was declared dead at around 5:20 am despite efforts to revive him.
Patekar’s son, Malhar Patekar, confirmed his death. The actor was reportedly taken for medical treatment after his health deteriorated in the early hours of Thursday. Doctors attempted continuous CPR for around 45 minutes, but he could not be revived.
The Maharashtra government has announced that Patekar will be cremated with full state honours in Pune. The decision recognises his extensive contribution to Indian theatre and cinema as well as his social work. His last rites are scheduled to be held at his farmhouse, where members of the public will also be able to pay their final respects.
Born Vishwanath Patekar, the actor began his film career with the 1978 movie Gaman after establishing himself in theatre. He went on to become one of the most distinctive performers in Indian cinema, earning acclaim for his intense acting style, commanding dialogue delivery and memorable screen presence.
His notable films include Parinda, Prahaar, Krantiveer, Agni Sakshi, Khamoshi: The Musical, Ab Tak Chhappan, Apaharan, Rajneeti, Welcome and the Marathi classic Natsamrat. His performance in Parinda earned him the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actor, while Krantiveer brought him the National Film Award for Best Actor.
Beyond cinema, Patekar was also known for his social initiatives, particularly his work supporting farmers through the Naam Foundation. His death has prompted an outpouring of tributes from actors, filmmakers, politicians, sportspersons and admirers across the country, with many describing his passing as the end of an important era in Indian cinema.
