Portuguese football star Cristiano Ronaldo has been provisionally suspended by the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) after the governing body initiated disciplinary proceedings over his departure from the national team camp ahead of a UEFA Nations League match against Denmark. The decision, announced on Saturday, October 10, follows a dispute involving the 41-year-old forward and Portugal head coach Jorge Jesus.
The disciplinary action stems from Ronaldo’s abrupt exit from the national team camp in Copenhagen on September 30. The incident occurred after the Portugal captain was left on the bench for the entire match against Norway, despite reportedly being told that he would receive playing time. Ronaldo subsequently expressed dissatisfaction with the handling of the situation and questioned the coach’s conduct.
The disagreement intensified after Jesus indicated that Ronaldo would not start Portugal’s next match against Denmark. The forward subsequently left the camp and issued a public statement explaining his decision. He accused the coach of failing to honour an understanding reached between them, while maintaining that he had respected the manager’s authority over team selection.
Ronaldo later apologised to supporters and his teammates for his departure, acknowledging that his actions could warrant disciplinary consequences. He also reiterated his commitment to representing Portugal, leaving open the possibility of returning to the national team after the matter is resolved.
The FPF’s disciplinary council has now opened a formal investigation to establish whether Ronaldo violated regulations governing players called up for international duty. The federation has classified the case as urgent and imposed a provisional suspension while the proceedings continue. The matter has been referred to the relevant disciplinary investigation committee, with further details expected to remain confidential until the inquiry concludes.
Under Portuguese football regulations, an unauthorised absence from national team activities can attract a suspension and financial penalty. The final punishment, if any, will depend on the findings of the disciplinary proceedings and the circumstances considered by the authorities.
