Allegations of Drug Trafficking Challenged After Teenager Dies in Punjab Village Conflict
News Mania Desk/ Piyal Chatterjee/ 16th October 2026
Claims that three individuals were assaulted by drug users and dealers in Gurdaspur district of Punjab, resulting in one fatality and two severe injuries, have been refuted by the victim’s sibling, who stated the confrontation arose from a disagreement regarding a mobile phone. Authorities have filed a case against 15 individuals and stated that the claims of drug trafficking are under investigation.
The event occurred at approximately 8:30 pm on Thursday in the village of Mari Pannwan, which is part of the Sri Hargobindpur Sahib Assembly constituency. The victim has been recognized as Bikramjit Singh, while Gurmukh Singh and Nishan Singh suffered significant injuries. Injured Gurmukh Singh reports that the clash started when local residents confronted some youths who were reportedly riding motorcycles and causing a disturbance in the village. He claimed that a group of 10 to 15 individuals assaulted the three men using sharp-edged weapons. Gurmukh Singh further asserted that the attackers were engaged in drug use and trafficking.
Nonetheless, Ranjit Singh, Bikramjit Singh’s brother, provided an alternate version of the event. He stated that the disagreement revolved around a cellphone owned by a young man named Jagroop Singh. He claimed that the phone was supposedly in the possession of another young person, Prince, and a dispute ensued when Bikramjit Singh requested its return. Bikramjit Singh, as he stated, had stepped in during the conflict prior to being assaulted.
Ranjit Singh explicitly refuted the claim that the incident was connected to drugs, opposing the accusations from the injured man’s family. In the meantime, Gurmukh Singh’s dad, Paramjit Singh, claimed that three to four local youngsters engaged in drug trafficking had summoned more individuals from outside the village. He connected the violence to a prior argument regarding a stolen cell phone, asserting that a police report was made on the 15th and that the family had later faced threats.
The varying narratives have sparked inquiries regarding the conditions that resulted in the deadly confrontation, while the drug trafficking claims remain unverified. DSP Manoj Kumar from the Sri Hargobindpur police station stated that a case has been filed against 15 individuals. In response to questions regarding the drug peddling allegations, he stated that the issue was currently being investigated.
Authorities have not yet determined a clear reason for the assault. The accusations from the injured man’s family, the refutation by the victim’s brother, and the assertions related to the previous mobile phone dispute will be investigated.
