Talk to JD Vance, Then Get Fired: The Story of Katie Zacharia’s Termination

News Mania Desk/ Piyal Chatterjee/ 17th October 2026

Jason Miller, a senior adviser to US President Donald Trump, interrupted Katie Zacharia while she was speaking with The Wall Street Journal about her ambitions to become the next White House press secretary. Miller asked her to join a brief conversation with Vice President JD Vance. Shortly afterwards, Zacharia was dismissed from the position.

Zacharia’s tenure lasted just five days. She arrived at the White House on Friday expecting a routine day and attended a meeting with communications staff in the Roosevelt Room. At around 1 pm, while she was being interviewed in her West Wing office, Miller knocked on the door and informed her that Vance wanted to speak with them.

Trump was reportedly at his newly constructed helipad when Zacharia left to meet Vance. She did not return to complete the interview or continue in the role.

Speaking to the WSJ later that evening, Zacharia said she had tried to organise a press briefing despite having limited time and information. She added that her objective had been to serve Trump and the American public to the best of her ability.

Her appointment had already attracted scrutiny following an underwhelming performance during her first press briefing. Questions also emerged about her professional credentials. Although Zacharia had described herself as a lawyer, she was unable to clarify whether she had passed the bar examination in any US state or in China, where she had previously worked for a major legal firm.

The Wall Street Journal subsequently reported that she had not passed the bar examination. Zacharia appeared on Fox News several times to defend herself, but the controversy continued.

The White House has denied that she was fired and stated that she would remain part of the Trump administration in another role, although no details about her new position have been announced.
