Sanju Samson Says He Plays for India, Not to Silence Critics After T20I Victory

News Mania Desk/ Piyal Chatterjee/ 24th October 2026

Sanju Samson has said that proving his critics wrong is not the reason he plays cricket, emphasising that his focus remains on performing for India and following his game plan. The wicketkeeper-batter made the remarks after producing an impressive innings in India’s opening T20I victory against New Zealand.

Samson scored 67 runs off just 33 deliveries, striking eight fours and four sixes, as India defeated New Zealand by four wickets in Christchurch on October 22, 2026. His aggressive batting helped India chase down a challenging target of 226, with the team reaching 230 for six in 19.4 overs.

Explaining his approach, Samson said he preferred to concentrate on his preparation and performance rather than external criticism. He stressed that his priority was contributing to the team’s success instead of responding to opinions about his place in the side.

Samson’s innings laid the foundation for India’s successful chase. He combined with Abhishek Sharma to put together an opening partnership of 93 runs, giving the visitors a strong start. Abhishek contributed 29 runs from 12 balls as India capitalised on the powerplay.

Although India lost several wickets during the middle overs, Shreyas Iyer scored 42 runs before Naman Dhir remained unbeaten on 42 to help the team cross the finish line. Samson also discussed India’s attacking batting philosophy, explaining that the team seeks to put opponents under pressure from the beginning. He acknowledged that such an approach would not always produce the desired result but maintained that confidence and commitment to the team’s strategy were essential.

Samson added that his performances in important matches at the T20 World Cup earlier in the year had strengthened his confidence. The victory gave India a 1-0 lead in the five-match T20I series. The teams are scheduled to meet again in Christchurch on October 24, with India looking to build on their opening success.
