Recently, a mother in Brazil gave birth to a two-foot-tall, 16-pound baby (7.3kg). In Parintins, Amazonas State’s Hospital Padre Colombo, Angerson Santos was delivered by cesarean section.
Angerson outweighed the largest baby girl ever born, who weighed 15 lbs (6.8 kg) when she was born in 2016, although neither of them came close to the record-breaking 22 lbs 8 oz (10.2 kg) infant born in Italy in 1955.
To put this into context, newborn girls weigh 7lb 2oz and newborn boys weigh 7lb 6oz (3.2 kg).
Macrosomia is the term used to describe these enormous infants (Greek for the large body). No of the gestational age, a baby is deemed to have macrosomia if it weighs more than 4 kg.
About 12% of births result in babies that have macrosomia. This climbs to 15% to 45% of newborns in moms with gestational diabetes, high blood sugar that develops during pregnancy.
Body weight is one of several elements that raise the possibility of a mother giving birth to a big baby.
A newborn with macrosomia is twice as likely to be born to an obese mother. Additionally, the risk of macrosomia is likewise increased by significant weight gain during pregnancy.
