According To Sundar Pichai, Some Google Employees Share Workstations With Coworkers In Order To Save Money

Given that some of its employees are allegedly being asked to share desk space with a few coworkers, it appears that Google is having financial difficulties. Sundar Pichai, CEO of the tech giant, disclosed at a conference that the action would result in cost savings. This is yet another cost-cutting move Google has implemented after laying off 12,000 workers across several countries, including India.

A few weeks ago, it was allegedly requested of the staff members who work in Google’s cloud division in at least five US cities, including New York City and San Francisco, to collaborate with coworkers in the office and share desks with them. The new desk-sharing strategy is currently only applicable to the cloud division, but Google’s CEO has stated that staff members in other teams are free to experiment with it as well.

The CEO also gave advice to staff members about how to spend money and resources wisely.

According to accounts, Google recently let go of 12,000 workers, and hundreds of jobs were also lost in India. Pichai stated in a post that it was a challenging choice and that the organization had carried out a thorough review across all product areas and functions to make sure that people and positions were in line with the most important objectives. According to the CEO’s details, employment cuts have been made across Alphabet, product areas, roles, levels, and regions. Additionally, he thanked the staff for their tireless efforts on behalf of all customers and companies.

The impacted workers will receive a severance package from Google that includes 16 weeks of salary, two weeks for each extra year of employment, and at least 16 weeks of GSU vesting, according to the CEO. Additionally, Google will reimburse 2022 bonuses and unused vacation days. Additional benefits include six months of medical coverage, assistance with finding work, and immigration support for those who need it.
