After The Hefty Costs For Stars, According To Subhash Ghai, Producers Are Left With No Money
The practice of Bollywood stars exacting astronomically large fees for films has drawn criticism from filmmaker Subhash Ghai, who claims that it leaves the producer with very little money to adequately produce a movie. The director-producer claimed that while directors ought to be compensated fairly, they are unable to do so because there is no money left over after paying the star.
In recent years, some of the top celebrities in Bollywood are said to have earned up to 100 crores for a single movie. This covers their salaries, dividend shares, and other entitlements. Although none of the celebrities have verified or denied these figures, it has been widely reported that celebrities demand exceptionally hefty fees, which make up the majority of the costs for their movies.
The seasoned filmmaker stated that since the majority of expenditures are now spent on stars’ excessive salaries, it is getting harder for producers to make movies. 80–90% paisa toh tum le gaye, he said in Hindi. Ab picture main kya banaun? 80–90% of the money was taken by the stars. Now, how can I produce the movie?). I’ll put aside between 5 and 10 crores and find a way to live. This is the situation that producers are in when they create movies today. How is this possible? The producer is the movie’s boss, but you only refer to him as the production manager. He is working on 20%, and by taking 80%, you are now in control of all the creative choices.
Since 2016, Subhash Ghai has not produced a movie. When a woman accused him of drugging and abusing her in 2018, he was also drawn into a MeToo issue. Later, the Mumbai Police cleared him of any wrongdoing in the matter.
