Age Limit for TRB Examinations Raised for Candidates
Edited by Agnibeena Ghosh
In a recent development, the age limit for candidates appearing for the Teachers’ Recruitment Board (TRB) examinations has been adjusted. A government order, issued on21st October, has raised the age limit to 53 years for the general category and 58 years for the reserved category. This decision represents a significant change from the previous age limits, which were set at 42 for the general category and 47 for reserved categories in January.
This latest adjustment follows a series of changes made to the age limits over the past year, reflecting the evolving circumstances surrounding teacher recruitment in the state. In October of the previous year, the age limit was temporarily increased to 45 years for the general category and 50 years for reserved categories. This measure was implemented in response to the disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, which resulted in the postponement of the Teachers Recruitment Board examination.
However, this modification to the age limit is not the only recent development in the realm of teacher recruitment. Aspirants who successfully qualified for the Teachers Eligibility Test (TET) in 2013 recently organized a protest on the PerasiriyarAnbazhagan campus. They were demanding the cancellation of a government order issued in 2018, which required teachers who had passed the TET to take another eligibility examination for government appointments.
Additionally, the protestors called upon the government to fulfill its promise of providing jobs to those who had successfully cleared the TET in 2013, aligning with the election promise made by the DMK party. A member of the TET Passed Candidates Welfare Association expressed their disappointment, stating that while the government had increased the age limit, they had not addressed the two other essential demands put forth by the aspirants.
The government order that raised the age limit also referred to a promise made by the school education minister during discussions held earlier in the month. Subsequently, the school education director communicated with the government, recommending an increase in the age limit, as detailed in the official government order.
The adjustment to the age limit for candidates appearing in TRB examinations represents an important step in the ongoing process of teacher recruitment in the state. These changes aim to accommodate various factors, including the challenges posed by the pandemic and the demands of aspirants who have passed the TET. While the increase in the age limit has been addressed, the government is now faced with the task of fulfilling the additional demands of those who are seeking government teaching appointments.
