Animal Rights Organization PETA Suing The UK Military And Has Also Appealed To King Charles
The unique bearskin helmets worn by ceremonial guards are well-known, and the animal rights organization PETA says it will file a lawsuit against the UK defense ministry for refusing to test a replica made of fake fur. The elite regiments don the tall black caps, including at the ritual of the Changing of the Guard outside Buckingham Palace.
The use of Canadian Black Bear fur has been outlawed by PETA for many years. The animal rights organization has created a replacement hat prototype using acrylic material that is shaggy.
In a statement earlier this year, the UK government stated that there were no intentions to change and that the faux fur supported by PETA does not in fact achieve the criteria needed to provide an acceptable replacement for our bearskin ceremonial headgear.
After an internet petition garnered more than 100,000 signatures, parliament began debating a switch to faux fur in July.
In the meantime, PETA is requesting that King Charles III wear faux fur instead of stoat-derived ermine robes at his coronation next year.
