Two British Indian female professionals, nutritionist-chef Radhika Howarth and historian-storyteller Seema Anand, are set to make their mark in the competitive world of business in the upcoming real-world series “Double the Money,” scheduled to premiere on Channel 4 next week. The series features 13 pairs of contestants who must double their starting pot of seed money within a few hours to stay in the game and compete for a substantial cash prize.
For Howarth and Anand, being part of “Double the Money” presents an opportunity to represent Indian women on an international platform and challenge stereotypes. As they embark on this adventure in their 60s, they express their enthusiasm for the experience and the bonds formed with fellow contestants.
“Each day on set has been a new adventure, and we’ve formed bonds with fellow contestants that will last a lifetime. It’s been an honour to challenge stereotypes and showcase our resilience and determination on a global stage,” they said.
In “Double the Money,” contestants have the freedom to decide how to invest their starting capital, requiring them to devise smart strategies and innovative ideas to increase their funds. However, repetition is not allowed, and contestants risk elimination if they attempt to reuse the same idea. Howarth and Anand draw inspiration from their Indian heritage, incorporating elements of cuisine, storytelling, and Bollywood into their approach.
“Watch us to see how, as two Indian women, we tackled business challenges and rolled with the punches because where there’s a will there’s a way. Whatever your age or background, we want you to know there’s nothing you can’t do,” they declared.
While Howarth is known for her work as the founder of Radikal Kitchen and her upcoming cookbook, Anand has gained recognition as a mythologist specializing in women’s narratives. Despite their individual successes, they acknowledge the challenge of venturing into the world of business in a mainstream television show hosted by Sue Perkins.
“This is an incredibly exciting format that breaks the mould of traditional game shows. By taking the competition out of the shiny TV studio and immersing the contestants in the real world, we’re sure to see some truly creative ways of making money as our pairs battle it out for the top cash prize,” said Jo Street, Head of Daytime and Features at Channel 4.
As the competition progresses, the cash targets increase, and teams have to navigate the pressure of time constraints. With each passing round, the stakes escalate, culminating in the final round where the remaining duo that accumulates the most money within the given time frame will claim the coveted cash prize.
“The world is full of people with great side hustles and weird and wonderful ways to make money. In challenging economic times, this format tests the couples’ money-making ideas and their relationships,” added Andrew Mackenzie, Co-CEO at South Shore, the production company behind the show.
