Parliament Monsoon session opens with Prime Minister giving statement to the press

. Both Houses of the Parliament were adjourned till Friday, 21 July after convening thrice on the first day of the Monsoon session began on Thursday as the Opposition created ruckus and demanded a discussion on the Manipur violence in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Karnataka MP and Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge urged chairperson Jagdeep Dhankar to “suspend all other business” to discuss Manipur.

“The Prime Minister has to open his mouth in this House,” TMC MP Derek O’Brien said in the Rajya Sabha earlier.

The Centre, meanwhile, repeatedly said in both Houses that it is ready for a discussion on the matter and questioned the Opposition’s motives behind not letting the Parliament function.

Ahead of the session, PM Modi addressed the media and said that the incident Manipur incident of women being paraded naked is “shameful for any civilised society.”

“I assure the nation that no guilty person will be spared. Law will take its course with all its might. What happened with the daughters of Manipur can never be forgiven,” PM Modi said.

  • The Opposition also plans to target the government on the Delhi ordinance and the issue of wrestlers vs BJP’s Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh among others.
  • The Centre, meanwhile, plans to target the recent violence during the panchayat elections in West Bengal and the Opposition’s ‘silence’ over it.
  • The Centre plans to push through 31 Bills in this session, including The Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi (Amendment) Bill to replace the ordinance on services in Delhi and The Digital Personal Data Protection Bill.
  • The Delhi ordinance Bill will face the key test in the Rajya Sabha where the Centre will need support of non-NDA parties to pass it.
  • Several Opposition leaders have demanded a suo motu statement by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the Manipur violence.
  • Issues like floods in north India, rail safety following the Odisha triple train collision, price rise, and unemployment are also reported to be on the Opposition’s agenda.
