In a significant diplomatic gesture, senior US officials warmly welcomed the Dalai Lama during his visit to New York on Wednesday, marking a rare high-level interaction between the exiled Tibetan spiritual leader and the United States government. This meeting, held while the Dalai Lama was in New York for medical treatment, has drawn sharp criticism from China, which continues to view the Dalai Lama as a separatist threat.
The Dalai Lama, who has long been at the center of tensions between Tibet and China, met with Uzra Zeya, a senior official from the State Department, and Kelly Razzouk, a representative of the White House National Security Council. During the meeting, Zeya reaffirmed the United States’ commitment to promoting human rights for Tibetans and supporting efforts to preserve their unique cultural, linguistic, and religious heritage. The Dalai Lama’s advocacy for greater autonomy for Tibet has made him a contentious figure in Chinese politics, where Beijing views any recognition of his authority as a challenge to its control over the region.
Zeya also expressed the United States’ support for resuming dialogue between the Chinese government and the Dalai Lama’s representatives, a process that has been stalled since 2010. The US has consistently voiced its concern over China’s strict control of Tibet, which Beijing considers an inalienable part of its territory. The Chinese government, however, denounces the Dalai Lama as a rebel and has shown no willingness to engage in talks aimed at increasing Tibetan autonomy.
China’s response to the meeting was swift and severe. On Thursday, Beijing condemned the interaction, accusing the Dalai Lama of engaging in anti-China separatist activities under the guise of religion. The Chinese government expressed strong disapproval of any country allowing the Dalai Lama to visit, especially when such visits involve meetings with government officials. Mao Ning, a spokesperson for China’s foreign ministry, announced that Beijing had lodged a strong protest with Washington over the meeting, reflecting the deep-seated tension between China and the Dalai Lama’s supporters.
The Dalai Lama, now 89 years old, has been in New York for medical reasons, including knee surgery he underwent in June. Despite his advancing age and health challenges, the Dalai Lama remains an influential figure both within the Tibetan community and on the global stage. He stepped down from his role as the political leader of Tibet in 2011, transferring secular authority to a democratically elected government representing approximately 130,000 Tibetans in exile around the world. This move was part of his broader strategy to democratize the Tibetan movement and ensure its survival beyond his lifetime.
The meeting in New York is the latest in a series of interactions between the Dalai Lama and US officials that have drawn ire from Beijing. In July, China sanctioned US Representative Jim McGovern for his support of Tibetan rights, following the passage of a law by Congress aimed at strengthening US support for Tibet. These actions highlight the ongoing struggle between the US and China over Tibet, a region that has been under Chinese control since 1951 and from which the Dalai Lama fled into exile in 1959.
The Dalai Lama’s visit to New York and the US government’s warm reception of him underscore the enduring complexities of the Tibet-China relationship and the international community’s role in this sensitive geopolitical issue.
