Modi speaking Trump’s language: Cong on PM’s remarks on global bodies

On Monday, the Congress criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his comments in a podcast regarding the importance of global organizations, asserting that the PM is evidently trying hard to please US President Donald Trump and “echoing his friend’s slogan.”

In his conversation with American podcaster and computer scientist Lex Fridman, Modi underscored the importance of alignment and cooperation to advance worldwide projects. He also discussed the significance of international bodies such as the United Nations, mentioning that their failure to adapt has ignited a global discussion regarding their significance.

Congress general secretary responsible for communications, Jairam Ramesh, stated, “Mr. Modi is evidently making a special effort to maintain Mr. Trump’s good spirits.”

“He says international organisations, from which India has benefited immensely, have become irrelevant.

“This is the US President’s language. In fact, it is Mr. Trump who is doing his best to make them irrelevant and now Mr. Modi is repeating ‘his good friend’s’ chant,” Ramesh claimed. Is the WHO not good for India and is the WTO not good for India, he asked.

“Is the Paris Agreement on Climate Change not good for India? Has the UN, inspite of all its weaknesses, not provided for opportunities for Indian peacekeepers abroad?” Ramesh said.

The Congress leader stated that while multilateralism requires reforms, it shouldn’t be subjected to the broad censure that President Trump and Prime Minister Modi are engaging in.

In the podcast published on Sunday, Prime Minister Modi mentioned that he has a relationship of mutual trust with Trump and that they relate effectively due to their shared belief in prioritizing their national interests above all else.

In the podcast, Modi also praised Trump as a courageous individual who made his own choices and was consistently devoted to the United States. He stated that the same spirit was evident when Trump was targeted by a shooter during last year’s election campaign. The prime minister noted that Trump seemed much more ready than he had in his previous term.
