Discover Tenith Adithyaa M.’S Ground-Breaking “Banana Leaf Technology”
The negative impacts of plastic are now widely known, yet a decade ago, some of us were less conscious of how plastic might affect the environment. Tenith Adithyaa M, then 11 years old, was passing a market in Watrap, Tamil Nadu’s Virudhunagar when he noticed some farmers igniting a pile of banana leaves. Adithyaa approached the farmers because he was curious about what was happening, and one of them said that it was because the leaves had withered and were no longer useful to them.
Due to this and four years of diligent research, Adithyaa was able to create the “Banana Leaf Technology,” an invention that extends the shelf life of banana leaves to over three years while also being completely chemical- and environment-free.
Innovator Tenith Adithyaa M
Adithyaa was reported as claiming that the world is accustomed to using plastic plates, straws, cups, polythene, and packaging when discussing his work back in 2020. He had the notion to utilise banana leaves in place of paper alternatives because they are wasteful and only used once.
He continued by saying that this approach for banana leaves boosts durability and maintains the leaves for over three years without the use of chemicals. The cost of creating these cups and plates is quite low, and they can later be utilized as manure or fodder because preserved leaves can withstand high temperatures and support more weight.
Saves money!
Tenith won more than seven international and two national prizes as a result of the success of his invention in the West. These distinctions include, among others, the International Environmental Award, Technology for the Future Award, and International Green Technology Award.
Adithyaa claims that the cost to create these straws, when fashioned from a banana leaf, is roughly ten paise per straw. In contrast, a plastic straw costs 70 paise, and plates made of it are only about Rs 1, while the price of plastic waste is Rs 4.
