The Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, claimed on October 10 in a covert criticism of Pandit Nehru that Sardar Patel settled disputes over the merger of other princely states but that one person could not settle the Kashmir dispute.
Speaking at a rally in this location ahead of the Gujarat Assembly elections scheduled for this year’s end, Modi added that by following in the footprints of Sardar Patel, he was able to resolve the long-standing Kashmir issue.
In addition, Mr. Modi said that Urban Naxals had attempted to thwart Sardar Patel’s vision for the Sardar Sarovar dam.

“Sardar saheb convinced every princely state to join India. But another guy handled this particular Kashmir issue,” Modi remarked, declining to mention India’s founding leader. Modi added, “As I am following in Sardar Saheb’s footsteps, I have values of Sardar saheb’s land, and that was the reason I addressed the Kashmir conflict and paid true honor to Sardar Patel.”
