‘”Fake MLA” In The West Bengal Legislature? The Guy Detained In The House Lobby Claiming “Governor’s Permission” To Enter
On February 15, Gajanan Varma entered the West Bengal legislative assembly and identified himself as an MLA. When seized and taken to the Hare Street police station, Varma entered the assembly lobby by posing as Legislator Manoj Tiwary from the Shibpur assembly constituency in Howrah. It called into question the Vidhan Sabha’s security.
The incident happened on the day that West Bengal’s state assembly was hearing the state budget.
Varma allegedly stated that he was sent by Governor C V Anand Bose and that he had authorization to enter the assembly, according to HT Bangla. At first, everyone thought he was psychologically ill. Questions were raised about the security failure that allowed Varma to enter the lobby following the shooting. Authorities are looking into this.
Manoj Tiwary is the state’s minister of sports and a former cricketer-turned-politician from Howrah’s Shibpur district.
The West Bengal government unveiled a budget for 2023–2024 costing Rs. 3.39 lakh crore and estimated the state’s GDP to expand by 8.4% in the current fiscal year.
