Five Of The World’s Largest Cities By Population

A new milestone has been attained in terms of the global population. Here are the top five cities in the world by population.

1. Tokyo, Japan

Tokyo is the city with the largest population in the world. It is now the world’s most densely populated metropolis with a population of 37,274,000. Tokyo has a staggering number of residents, but in recent years, the city’s population growth has slowed, with recorded declines ranging from a 0.09 percent drop from 2018 to 2019 to a 0.18 percent drop from 2021 to 2022. The slowed growth has several causes, according to experts, including an aging population and low birth rates. Another reason could be that the Japanese government implemented tax incentives for Japanese companies to relocate from Tokyo to less-populated prefectures and offered subsidies for citizen employees to do the same.

2. Delhi, India

The population of Delhi, India, is 32,065,760. However, this second-place finish among the greatest cities on the planet might not last long. By the year 2028, some population growth projections predict that Delhi could have 56.4 million residents. The Red Fort Complex, so named for its red-tinted limestone walls, is one of many places in Delhi that have all been named World Heritage Sites.

3. Shanghai, China

With a current population of 28,516,904, Shanghai, China, is expected to experience rapid population growth in the coming years. Shanghai’s population has increased annually between 2.59 percent and 2.87 percent since 2018. As a result, Shanghai is likely to not only maintain its current position as one of the world’s three most populous cities but also compete for one of the top two spots in the future. Shanghai, a commercial powerhouse with one of the biggest seaports in the world, is situated in east-central China.

4. Dhaka, Bangladesh

Dhaka, Bangladesh, is rapidly moving up the list of the world’s most populous cities with a population of 22,478,116. It is also one of the cities with the highest population density. Dhaka was ranked No. 7 in 2018 but has now moved up to No. 4 on this list because of multiple years of significant population increase (more than 3 percent). Bangladesh, which borders the Bay of Bengal in the Indian Ocean, is centered around the city of Dhaka. The city acts as the center of government and commerce for the nation. Since gaining independence in 1971, Bangladesh has experienced rapid growth, and it is anticipated that this trend will continue.

5. São Paulo, Brazil

The population of So Paulo, Brazil, is 22,429,800. So Paulo is ranked No. 1 among Brazil’s 110 urban areas and No. 5 on this list of the world’s most populous cities. The city is situated in southeast Brazil and is encircled by slopes and valleys. It has a reputation as being the biggest metropolis in the Southern Hemisphere and a major economic and industrial hub worldwide. Officials in So Paulo banned outdoor billboards and banners in 2007 in an effort to protect the city’s picturesque scenery. Although the ban was initially opposed, it was soon praised for its positive effects, chief among them the promotion of previously underappreciated architecture, including structures like the Municipal Theater of So Paulo.
