Today, a Full Dome Film, “Luminaries of Bengal” to be displayed in the full dome theatre of Science City, Kolkata, an Exhibition “Birth of an Artist: The Early Years of Abanindranath Tagore” and a Light & Sound Show “Kolkata: City of Joy” to be displayed at Victoria Memorial Hall, Kolkata were inaugurated by the Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation, Shri Amit Shah in presence of Shri Arjun Ram Meghwal, Hon’ble Minister of State for Culture and Parliamentary Affairs at Science City, Kolkata. Office Building Complex of Anthropological Survey of India and “Reader’s Hostel cum Guest House” of the National Library were also dedicated to the nation by him.
The full dome film, “Luminaries of Bengal” has been developed to commemorate the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav and is the first of its kind film completely developed and produced in India in three languages – Hindi, Bengali and English. It is being showcased in both 2D and 3D formats, using 4K technology, on a 23-meter diameter digital full-dome theatre. The opening scenes of the film feature breathtaking views of the snow-covered mountains of Darjeeling and Sandakuf, as well as the serene hills of Purulia and Bankura. The dynamic, ever-moving waves of the ocean in Digha and Mandarmani are also highlighted. The film then takes us on a journey through the winding rivers of the vast Ganga Delta. Moving on, it delves into the early history of Bengal and explores the significant contributions of various personalities in the domains of science, culture, art, music, literature, and spirituality. The film also sheds light on the pivotal role played by the people of Bengal in India’s freedom struggle.
The Light and Sound show “Kolkata: City of Joy” presents an updated story of the history, present and past of Kolkata in an engaging manner which will educate and entertain all sections of people, especially the youth. The Show presents the history and culture of Kolkata in a technologically innovative format and attempts to put forth the richness of the heritage of Kolkata to the public in a humorous and amusing manner.
Celebrating the sesquicentennial birth anniversary of Abanindranath Tagore, the Victoria Memorial Hall in Kolkata presents the exhibition “Birth of an Artist: The Early Years of Abanindranath Tagore.” As the foundational figure of the Bengal School of Art, he is renowned as the “Father of Modern Indian Art.” This exhibition showcases rare and unseen artworks from his early days, including sketches from his school-going years, documenting the sloped terraces of Bengal’s mud house architecture. The exhibition promises to provide numerous clues to the inception of his artistic journey and offers a unique opportunity for art lovers and scholars to explore the formative years of the great Indian artist.
The Office Building Complex of the Anthropological Survey of India was constructed in two phases. Phase-I saw the construction of the Office-Cum-Central Anthropological Library building and transit accommodation in 2006. Phase-II included the New Office Building constructed by CPWD Authority, with an estimated cost of Rs.72.22 crore. Completed in March 2022, the complex houses an eight-storied building with a DNA laboratory, auditorium, central museum, and library, among others. The Survey also provides transit accommodation for its field officials in sixteen flats.
The National Library, under the central Ministry of Culture, is an “Institution of National Importance” and has been open to the public since 1953. A new fully-furnished and air-conditioned “Readers’ Hostel cum Guest House” has been opened for eminent scholars to stay while doing research. This will benefit many people and add to the library’s reputation.
