Germany’s Niclas Fuellkrug scored a stoppage-time header to salvage a 1-1 draw against Switzerland on Sunday in Frankfurt, ensuring the Euro hosts finished atop Group A.

The Swiss stunned the home crowd when Dan Ndoye found the net from close range after 28 minutes, taking a surprise lead. Despite Germany’s efforts to equalize, it wasn’t until the dying moments of the game that veteran striker Fuellkrug nodded home, securing a crucial point for his team.

With this draw, Switzerland faces a tougher challenge in the Round of 16, potentially meeting formidable opponents like Italy or Croatia. Meanwhile, Germany looks set to encounter the runner-up from England’s Group C, currently Denmark.

Reflecting on the match, Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann expressed satisfaction with the late equalizer, stating, “I think the equaliser was deserved, as was the group win. We threw a lot forward at the end.” Fuellkrug, reflecting on his decisive goal, added, “The cross was perfect. That was a nice moment for us as a team, that could be decisive. That changes the situation.”

Heading into the match, Germany had shown optimism after solid performances in their earlier group stage matches against Scotland and Hungary. Led by experienced midfielders Ilkay Gundogan and Toni Kroos, Germany had hoped to continue their momentum but were caught off guard by Switzerland’s energetic play, struggling to create clear-cut opportunities.

Despite the late heroics from Fuellkrug, Nagelsmann will need to address the team’s overall performance, which he described as “stodgy.” The coach opted for the same starting XI for the third consecutive game, a decision that backfired when defender Jonathan Tah received a second yellow card, ruling him out of Germany’s upcoming knockout game.

“We have enough quality to compensate for that,” Nagelsmann reassured, despite his frustration with the unjust yellow card for Tah.

Germany started the match brightly, attempting to capitalize on their home advantage and launching long balls against Switzerland’s midfield press. They appeared to take the lead early through Robert Andrich, only for VAR to disallow the goal due to a foul in the buildup by Jamal Musiala.

The Swiss capitalized on Germany’s lapse in concentration, scoring through Ndoye after a swift counterattack initiated by Musiala’s loss of possession in midfield and Joshua Kimmich’s subsequent error.

The goal rattled Germany, who struggled to regain their composure before halftime. In the second half, Nagelsmann made offensive changes to spark his team’s attack, but they faced resilient Swiss defense, with Manuel Akanji’s crucial block denying Kimmich a close-range opportunity.

With time running out, Nagelsmann’s substitution of Fuellkrug proved decisive, as the striker headed in David Raum’s cross to rescue Germany and secure their top spot in Group A.

The draw ensures an intriguing Round of 16 matchup for both teams, with Germany aiming to extend their tournament run and Switzerland seeking to overcome tougher opposition in the knockout stage.
