Collegium Suggests That Bombay High Court Chief Justice Dipankar Datta Be Promoted To The Position Of Supreme Court Judge

On June 22, 2006, Justice Datta was appointed as a permanent judge to the Calcutta High Court bench.
The government has been advised to appoint Dipankar Datta, the chief justice of the Bombay High Court, as a justice of the supreme court by the Supreme Court Collegium.
On September 26, the Collegium met under the direction of Chief Justice of India U.U. Lalit and adopted the resolution.
Justice Datta’s primary High Court is located in Calcutta.
On June 22, 2006, Justice Datta was appointed as a permanent Judge to the Calcutta High Court Bench.
On April 28, 2020, he was promoted as Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court.
1965 saw the birth of Justice Datta. Former Calcutta High Court Judge S.K. Datta was his father and passed away. Justice Amitava Roy, his brother-in-law, served as a Supreme Court justice in the past.
Justice Datta attended the University of Calcutta to study law. In the late 1990s, he served as the Union of India’s legal representative. From 2002 to 2004, he served as West Bengal’s permanent legal representative. He specialized in civil and constitutional law.
The Collegium, under the direction of Chief Justice Lalit, has recommended Justice Datta as its first candidate.
There are now 29 judges on the Supreme Court, including the CJI. 34 people are allowed to participate.
A few days have passed since Justice Indira Banerjee retired before Justice Datta’s recommendation. The Supreme Court now has three instead of four female judges as a result of Justice Banerjee’s retirement. Justice K.M. Joseph joined the prestigious Collegium after Justice Banerjee retired.
