Gippy Grewal demands Sikh representation in CBFC

News Mania Desk/Piyal Chatterjee/6th September 2024

Recently, Gippy Grewal, who is now promoting Ardaas Sarbat De Bhale Di, stated that the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) needs to include a Sikh member. Gippy emphasized that the presence of a Sikh on the board will aid in the certification of movies that depict the community. The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee made a similar request a few days ago.

According to Gippy, the CBFC can point out certain errors but is unable to recognize religious misrepresentation. While Kangana Ranaut’s Emergency is being held up in the CBFC for allegedly misrepresenting the Sikh community, Gippy made his remarks. Gippy claims that he exhibited his upcoming film to the gurudwara council at Hazur Sahib in Maharashtra, and they granted him a nod of approval. He claimed to have sent the film for certification with the NOC attached.

He said , “We showed ‘Ardaas’ to the Hazur Sahib Prabhandhak Committee first and took an NOC from them before sending the film to the censor board. The board can check on the larger things, but it is important for an expert member to check the things from a religious perspective.” Further he added, “Having a Sikh representative in the board is important for films which talk about Sikhism, represent the community or represent the state of Punjab in any form.”

A few days ago, the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee called for Sikh representation on the CBFC board and urged that Kangana Ranaut’s movie Emergency be banned. “Having a Sikh member on the Central Film Censor Board is crucial, as judgments are being made unilaterally only due to their absence. Although the Shiromani Committee has often passed resolutions in its general meeting calling for the inclusion of a Sikh representative on the Central Film Censor Board, it is unfortunate that the government is not carrying out this demand. It is imperative that this movie be banned because it is only normal for the Sikh community to get highly enraged and resentful upon the release of this movie.
